An elephant can reach exactly seven points, all on its own half of the board: two home corners, three on the second rank, and two on the river bank. It jumps the 田 — two diagonal points — and never crosses the river. And if any piece stands in the 田's centre, the elephant's eye is blocked (塞象眼) and that jump dies.
