An elephant reaches exactly seven points, all on its own half of the board: the home corners c0 and g0, three points on the second rank — a2, e2, i2 — and the two river-bank points c4 and g4. It jumps the field 田, two diagonal points at a stroke, and never crosses the river. The catch sits in the middle: if any piece stands at the field's centre, the eye is blocked (塞象眼) and that whole jump dies.
