过宫炮 — the palace cannon — slides the right cannon across the palace to d2 in a single move. Nothing is attacked, yet much is decided: the right wing gains a cluster of cannon, horse and elephant, the chariot's road stays open, and the whole formation is compact and hard to hit. The plan: a solid centre, patient development, and a strike only when a real target appears.
