On its own side a soldier has exactly one move: one step forward. The instant it crosses the river it earns a second dimension — sideways, left or right, one point at a time. Never backward: there is no road home, so every crossed soldier is a commitment. The markers show the e5 soldier's full reach: press on to e6, or turn the corner to d5 and f5 — from the bank, all three futures are open, and the choice is the whole art of pawn play.
