A soldier never moves backward — and it can never RETURN either. Every push permanently seals the points behind it: whatever the soldier walks past is gone from its life for good, and whatever it fails to eat on the way stays uneaten forever. Before each push, ask the same question: will I ever need this square again? Lesson 5.2 named the prices — high pawn, low pawn, bottom pawn; this rule is why those names matter.
